Fire Amidst the Pandemic
Responding to the Kanchan Kunj Refugee Camp tragedy during India’s second COVID-19 wave.
A Double Tragedy
During the peak of India’s catastrophic second COVID-19 wave in April 2021, the Kanchan Kunj Refugee Camp in New Delhi was struck by a devastating fire. In an instant, over 55 families were displaced, losing their shelter when the city was already in lockdown. Responding with urgency, UFH launched a specialized four-day relief mission to address immediate survival and psychological needs.
The 4-Day Relief Mission
Survival Essentials
The intervention began immediately with essential nutrition. We distributed milk packets and biscuits to ensure that no child or family went hungry in the chaotic aftermath.

Comfort & Joy
Addressing psychological needs, we included thoughtful gestures to bring comfort. We distributed pizzas and chocolates to the affected children, restoring a brief moment of joy amidst the trauma.

Restoring Dignity
To protect their feet from the debris of the fire, we prioritized health and dignity by distributing 200 pairs of shoes to the residents of the camp.

Hygiene for Infants
Ensuring proper hygiene for the youngest victims, we distributed 500 diapers. This critical step prevented infection and supported mothers struggling in the makeshift shelters.

Beyond Immediate Relief
The UFH Welfare Academy
Beyond short-term aid, UFH demonstrated a commitment to long-term recovery. We established a dedicated batch at the UFH Welfare Academy specifically for the children of Kanchan Kunj.
This educational initiative directly answered their plea for help in resuming their studies and securing their futures despite the tragedy.
